| Dr Trudie Binder     School of Medical Sciences - Department of PharmacologyStatement of Interests:
Therapy for inflammatory arthritis, in particular opioid analgesics and bisphosphonates. Rheumatoid arthritis a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder, with a world wide distribution and is associated with significant pain and disability. Models of arthritis are used to investigate the immunopharmacological mechanisms by which opioids and bisphosphonates mediate their anti-arthritic actions and the therapeutic potential of combinational therapy. | Dr Paul Bird     St George Clinical School - Department of MedicineStatement of Interests:
The evaluation of Magnetic Resonce Imaging as an indicator of treatment response and predictor of treatment outcome in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Collaborative research with the international MRI Rheumatoid Arthritis Research group is concerned with ongoing evaluation of scoring and computerised techniques for evaluating joint damage using MRI. Ongoing research - development of MRI parameters for the assessment of treatment response in Ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis. Development of an imaging tool to predict severity at diagnosis in rheumatoid arthritis. More...

| Professor Ric Day     St Vincent's Clinical SchoolStatement of Interests: Rheumatic disorders and Diabetes are prevalent chronic illnesses that demand high quality pharmacotherapy. We are researching powerful techniques for individualising pharmacotherapy using pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models. Our aim is safe yet effective therapy. Allopurinol used in gout and metformin used in diabetes are currently being studied. Also we are investigating the mechanisms of paracetamol actions. We are examining genetic factors that predict serious adverse drug reactions and explain variation in response to medicines. The effects of electronic medication management in a teaching hospital on the rate of adverse events occurring is a new research interest. More...

| Professor Patrick McNeil     South Western Sydney Clinical School - Department of MedicineStatement of Interests:
Patrick McNeil heads a research group exploring mast cell biology and novel inflammatory pathways in rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune connective tissue diseases, especially focusing on molecular mechanisms of inflammation. He has a long term focus on mast cell proteinases including characterisation of novel human tryptase genes, and the role of mast cell proteinases in rheumatoid arthritis. More recently he has research programs investigating expression of LLIR's in rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular disease in rheumatoid arthritis. More...

| Dr Sean O'Neill     South Western Sydney Clinical SchoolStatement of Interests:
Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus and their associated risk of cardiovascular disease. Collaborative work with University College London examines the role of traditional cardiac risk factors, novel autoantibodies and the effects of inflammation in such patients. More...
