| Professor Gavin Andrews     School of PsychiatryStatement of Interests:
No country can afford the health care its citizens desire. Resources should be deployed in terms of the burden of disease and the cost-effectiveness of interventions for it is the most efficient policy but how do you reconcile fairness, equity and caring for the sick? we have a research program active in this area. In developed countries chronic disease is the problem: both prevention of the disease and better patient centered management once they occur. We have an active program to develop school based prevention of anxiety and depressive disorders. We have an active program to improve patient education in primary care [see http://www.climate.tv] More...

| Professor Michael Barton     South Western Sydney Clinical School - Department of MedicineStatement of Interests:
Cancer outcomes are affected by a wide range of factors beyond the efficacy of screening or treatment interventions. The application of current best practice is estimated to improve overall survival from cancer by about 10%. Interventions in the delivery of cancer care that can improve outcomes range from the micro patient care) to the macro health service reform) and stretch across the continuum from formative educational experiences to daily clinical practice. | Associate Professor Gideon Caplan     Prince of Wales Clinical School - Department of MedicineStatement of Interests:
The delivery of acute health services has potential benefits and side effects of an order of magnitude greater than most pharmaceutical agents, yet are rarely vigorously studied. It may be possible to manipulate these effects by, for example, the substitution for care in the hospital with care at home, during the acute or post acute phases. This would bring benefits for health outcomes, patient satisfaction and costs to the health system which need to be defined. Delirium is the most common problem bedevilling older people in hospital. Yet little is understood about the basic pathophysiology of delirium. Using a multidisciplinary, bedside to lab bench approach, we hope to unlock the mystery of delirium. More...

| Dr Margaret Faedo     Prince of Wales Clinical SchoolStatement of Interests:
One of the biggest challenges facing health care systems today is providing patients with access to new and emerging drug treatments, and at the same time ensuring the sustainability of funding. Local health care delivery systems, such as area health services, hospitals and private health insurers are under considerable pressure to fund medicines rejected, restricted or pending approval by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee. There is a need to develop freely available economic models that can adapt easily to local circumstances. This requires new policies and health care practices developed on the basis of sound clinical and economic evidence. Our NHMRC funded program aims to build and disseminate readily accessible evidence about the cost effectiveness of cancer medicines in clinical practice. These models will be available on the Cancer Institute NSW Standard Treatment (CI-SCaT) program, an online resource of more than 500 peer-reviewed cancer treatment guidelines. This is a world first program which will have implications beyond cancer management, addressing one of the most enduring problems in health care: the translation of economic evidence into policy and clinical practice. A/Professor Johnson has a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina and a PhD in evaluative clinical sciences from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. The area of focus for her doctoral research was building an understanding of the structure, process, and outcomes of the clinical microsystem – the small group of providers and staff that care for a defined population of patients. She uses qualitative research methods – including focus groups, interviews, and observational studies – to better understand processes of care and the effect of the care process on clinical teams, teamwork, and patients and families. While on the faculty at University of Chicago, she used qualitative methods to study errors in ambulatory pediatric settings, to conduct observations in pediatric cardiac surgery, to observe how clinical teams function on inpatient medicine rounds, and to improve handovers of patient care.
