| Professor Robyn Richmond     School of Public Health and Community MedicineStatement of Interests: Robyn’s research encompasses a broad spectrum of public health issues conducted over 26 years. Her research has focussed on the reduction of smoking among patients attending general practitioners and hospital outpatients clinics; the evaluation of the use of a range of pharmacotherapies to assist smokers to quit; the reduction of risky alcohol consumption among patients attending general practitioners and hospital outpatients clinics; improvement of health and lifestyles and reduction of cardiovascular risk factors among high risk groups in workplace settings and Indigenous people, and disadvantaged groups such as among those with a mental illness and prisoners; and investigation of the cardiovascular health of centenarians. Her research has led to fundamental and long standing impacts on policy, clinical practice, teaching and training. Her global research work includes a series of studies extending over 12 years in which she has developed and evaluated teaching programs on tobacco and smoking cessation techniques which have been implemented in medical schools globally. Recently, Robyn's research interests have expanded to include the phenomenal growth of centenarians in our society, and the lifestyle and genetic factors that influence longevity. Robyn was invited in 1991 to join as a representative of Australia, the Tobacco Prevention Section, which is a section of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. From 1994-1996, she was the elected Deputy Chair of the Tobacco Prevention Section and then from 1996 to 1998, the elected chair. This position lead to running training workshops in many countries including: Thailand, Turkey, France. During Robyn's academic career, she has published 104 papers in refereed journals, 37 books and booklets and 17 chapters in books. Her H index is 26. During Robyn's research career she has presented 188 papers at national and international conferences. | Ms Emily Waller     School of Public Health and Community MedicineStatement of Interests:
Emily Waller is the Research and Development Manager for the cross-faculty UNSW Initiative for Health and Human Rights. Her research interests include the links between health, human rights and gender in conflict-affected settings, especially in relation to international and institutional responses to sexual and gender-based violence. Her most recent work focused on the UN response to sexual exploitation and abuse by UN peacekeepers from a victim-centred and human rights perspective. She previously worked on a research project drawing on the experience of academics and practitioners to explore the interface between health systems, conflict prevention, support for post-conflict recovery and peacebuilding. This research has lead to the development of The Health and Peacebuilding Filter, which is designed to provide rapid assessment of peacebuilding and conflict prevention components of health initiatives in conflict-affected settings. Ms. Waller spent time in Sri Lanka and the Solomon Islands as part of the research team exploring the practical applications for the Filter. | Professor Anthony Zwi     School of Public Health and Community MedicineStatement of Interests: Professor Zwi focuses on international health and policy and has interests in their interface with equity, social justice and human rights. He seeks to build Australia and Asia-Pacific partnerships and capabilities in public health, health policy, and disaster planning, management and response. He has worked most extensively in the past year in Timor-Leste (East Timor), but also has had recent research projects in Sri Lanka, the Solomon Islands and Cambodia. He is interested in understanding, and improving mechanisms, to facilitate evidence-informed health and development policy. Professor Zwi is keen to build links between humanitarian relief and development organisations and academic institutions. He has interests in injury and violence as public health problems. He heads a team exploring how health-related interventions in countries which have experienced disasters and wars could be more sensitive to culture, conflict, and to rebuilding trust and social cohesion. He and colleagues work on the ethics of research in conflict-affected settings, and the role of service providers and community members, including young people, in shaping and influencing research and responses to violent political conflict.
