    Statement of Interests:

    The primary research focus of the lab is on the regulation of the cytoskeleton in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease with a particular interest in the microfilament system. For this we employ cell and tissue cultures, prepared from genetically modified mice which express altered levels of the actin dynamics-regulating protein tropomyosin. Other projects in the lab focus on the role of the cytoskeleton in early neuronal development. Recent outcome of these projects demonstrate that tropomyosin isoforms regulate early processes such as neurite formation in an isoform-specific manner.

Dr Zhanhai Gao

    Dr Zhanhai Gao has qualifications (BSc and MSc) in mathematics & statistics and a PhD in applied mathematics (mathematical modelling). His current research interests include modelling the impact of vaccination on varicella zoster virus epidemiology, modelling and evaluating intervention programs of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C epidemics in Australia (the subject of his PhD thesis). His research work includes modelling infectious disease in livestock (VC's post-doctoral research), dynamical systems and mathematical biology / biomathematics, infectious disease programming and computuing. He is also involved in biostatistics, statistical analysis / computing for medical research, data management and study design for cluster randomisation trials. It is his strong field as well to develop toolbox or stand alone software of easy-to-use form for medical researchers from non-mathematics or computer science background.

    In the field of cancer the major focus is in defining molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in relapsed childhood leukaemia. New experimental models of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia have been developed that will be used to delineate mechanisms of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and investigate novel biological characteristics of the disease. In addition, these experimental models will be used test novel therapeutic agents/strategies for management of the high-risk or relapsed patient.

    HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis epidemiology, mathematical modelling, evidence synthesis, measuring health-related quality of life and utilities, and health services research. She is particularly interested in using dynamic models to assess the impacts of behavioural changes, treatments, vaccination and other prevention strategies on the health and economic burden of HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis. Current research includes estimation of long-term health care costs attributable to hepatitis C using serological and administrative data, epidemiology of liver cancer and mortality attributable to viral hepatitis and coinfection with HIV in NSW using data linkage techniques, and economic evaluation of current and future costs of hepatitis C in Australia and the potential impact of increased treatment uptake.

    The rhythm of the heart beat is controlled by electrical signals carried by voltage-gated ion channels. Dysfunction of cardiac ion channels can result in arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. There are three main research themes in my laboratory. 1. Structure-function relationships in voltage-gated ion channels with a particular emphasis on hERG K+ channels. 2. The molecular basis of drug binding to hERG potassium channels and drug-induced cardiac arrhythmias. 3. Understanding genotype-phenotype relationships in inherited arrhythmia syndromes.
