| Professor Marie-Paule Austin     School of PsychiatryStatement of Interests:
Professor Austin's doctoral thesis examined the cognitive, imaging and neurochemical correlates of depression. Over the last 10 years Austin has focussed on the detection of, treatment and impact on infant outcomes, of mood disorders arising in the perinatal period. During this time she has undertaken a number of prospective studies: the first assessed the mental health of 2,000 mothers antenatally and then at 2, 4, 6 months postpartum. This study also allowed the evaluation of the association between antenatal maternal depression & anxiety and obstetric outcomes and infant temperament at 4 months. The Pregnancy Risk Questionnaire was developed and validated as a useful psychosocial risk assessment tool and independently tested in a furhter 2,400 women. Austin has conducted two RCTs: an antenatal CBT intervention and an RCT examining the use of Omega-3 in the treatment of antenatal depression and its role in the aetiology of this condition. In conjunction with her Developmental Psychology colleagues, Austin has undertaken a prospective trial following up 84 mothers recruited in pregnancy and evaluating the endocrinological, neurodevelopmental and behavioural correlates for the infant, of maternal pregnancy anxiety. The infants are now turning 3 and the team have developed expertise in the assessment of infant stress reactivity and maternal sensitivity. Austin is also currently undertaking a study of the effects of selective serotonin Reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) taken in pregnancy on infant outcomes at 18 months using the Bailey scales. Planned studies will examine outcomes of women with bipolar disorder postpartum; genotyping studies in women with postpartum depression and psychosis; as well as examining for the presence of 5HTTP polymorphisms in infants with high stress reactivity; and the role of reproductive hormones in the development of mother-infant attachment. Publications:Austin has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers (35 as first author) in the field of mood disorders.Citation count at Nov 2007: total 1962 with 892 as first author. More...

The field of Hyperbaric Medicine is regarded with great suspicion by many medical graduates. This is due at least in part to both widespread ignorance of the effects of high doses of oxygen, and a poor clinical research base. In this regard, the appropriate collation, critical appraisal and meta-analysis of comparative clinical trials is of great interest. Work is underway with colleagues from the USA, UK and Germany to produce a systematic appraisal of the evidence-basis for the use of hyperbaric oxygenation. More...

There is considerable evidence for the effectiveness of interventions to prevent cardiovascular disease at the population and individual levels. Given the contribution of cardiovascular disease to the burden of disease, the cost of inadequate prevention is high.. Large, population-based studies in China, Finland and USA have recently demonstrated the feasibility of preventing, or delaying, the onset of diabetes in overweight subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). The studies suggest that even moderate reduction in weight and only half an hour of walking each day reduced the incidence of diabetes by more than one half. More...

Despite similar levels of LV dysfunction, patients with heart failure vary in their ability to function. This is yet to be adequately explained and may relate to how the heart and arterial system interact (ventriculovascular coupling). As part of the Heart Failure & Transplant Unit, these, and other areas, are investigated. More...

| Dr Xing-Mai Jiang     St George Clinical SchoolStatement of Interests:
Autoimmune thrombocytopenia is a common complication of therapy with a large number of drugs. In most cases, antibodies bind to the platelet membrane glycoprotein (GP) Ib-IX complex in a drug-dependant fashion and bring about increased platelet clearance by the reticuloendothelial system resulting in drug-induced thrombocytopenia (DIT). The binding sites of GPIX-specific quinine-induced antibodies have been located in this lab. By using recombinant and soluble GPIba, Ibb, and GPIX protein fragments, models on drug-to-GPIb/IX, and antibody-to-GPIb/IX binding can be set up to demonstrate the molecular and structural bases of HIT, DIT, and ITP. | Dr Arun Krishnan     School of Medical SciencesStatement of Interests:
My major area of interest is in the area of clinical neurophysiology, particularly in the use of nerve excitability techniques as a means of investigating the pathophysiology of neuropathic processes. Measurements of excitability are cutting-edge techniques that provide information related to the activity of a variety of ion channels, energy-dependent pumps and ion exchange processes activated during impulse conduction. These are novel techniques which our group has applied to the study of mechanisms underlying the development of neuropathy and nerve injury. Specifically, we have applied these techniques to the study of metabolic and toxic neuropathies including those that occur secondary to diabetes, end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and chemotherapy. Other studies have explored the responses of nerves to ischaemia, natural activity and altered electrolyte balance. Recently, excitability techniques have been applied to the assessment of cortical excitability using transcranial magnetic stimulation and we propose to apply these techniques to the study of neurodegenerative processes and central channelopathies. These methods are being applied to a range of conditions affecting human peripheral nerves, in order to help determine the pathophysiology of the neuropathy, or to improve diagnosis. | Dr Dimitra Tzioumi     School of Women's and Children's HealthStatement of Interests: Children in out-of-home care (foster care) are recognised as being a highly vulnerable group of children with increased health needs. There is evidence that these children have an increased prevalence of acute and chronic health problems, developmental disabilities and mental health needs. These needs are often unrecognised and unmet. The Sydney Childrens Hospital Child protection Unit is undertaking a Health Screening Project to document the health needs of children in out of home care in order to improve health outcomes. More...

| Dr Michael Valenzuela     School of PsychiatryStatement of Interests:
Dr Valenzuela is a Research Fellow in Regenerative Neuroscience at the School of Psychiatry, UNSW and the Neuropsychiatric Institute, Prince of Wales Hospital. His background is in psychology, clinical medicine and neuroscience research. His PhD focused on the topic of brain reserve, specifically how complex mental activity affects the development and expression of dementia. This question was tackled using a multi-modal and longitudinal approach, bringing together epidemiological, neuroimaging and biochemical techniques. For this work he was awarded the prestigious Eureka Prize for Medical Research in 2006. Dr Valenzuela’s current research interests are aimed at further understanding the competing forces of neuroplasticity and neurodegeneration in the human brain, and how these can either lead to, or help prevent, dementia. He is working on a range of studies across various technologies, including in vivo brain imaging, post-mortem brain tissue analysis, neural stem cell culture, and animal behaviour. Dr Valenzuela also believes that the problem of dementia is a critical one for modern society, and is committed to communicating dementia-prevention health ideas to the public. More...

| Professor Robyn Ward     Prince of Wales Clinical SchoolStatement of Interests:
In the field of hereditary cancer, the impact of germline epimutations as a cause of cancer is a main field of study. This work represents a substantive change in our understanding of colorectal cancer predisposition, and is of clinical relevance. In the clinical field research studies involve interventional and observational studies of targeted therapies for cancer. In health policy, the research activities revolve around developing cost effective models for the use of cancer medicines in our community. More...
