45 year health check CPHCE to assess
From November 2006, general practices will be able to provide a one off health check for people aged between 43 and 47 who are at risk of chronic disease.
The Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing will launch the new Medicare item to assist with the detection and prevention of chronic disease and to enable GPs to provide early intervention strategies where appropriate.
CPHCE has been successful in securing funding from APHCRI to look at the effectiveness of the health check and inform Government policy on preventative health.
“CPHCE is excited to undertake such an important study,” said Ms Cheryl Amoroso, project manager for the 45 year health check.
She explained that the study sought to examine the effectiveness of such a visit, as well as looking at the sustainability of the health check for patients and general practice. The project will also identify what support and services are required to achieve results.
“The work is particularly important in light of the increasing number of Australians at risk for and living with chronic disease,” Ms Amoroso said.
