MESCH Project succesful in two awards- November 2006
A team involving UNSW researchers has won an accolade at the NSW Premier’s Public Sector Awards.
The Miller Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting program (MECSH) won a Bronze award in the Social Justice category.
“The pilot project amongst vulnerable families in Miller resulted in improved child and maternal health outcomes,” said Lynn Kemp, the Acting Director of the Centre for Health Equity Training, Research and Evaluation (CHETRE) at UNSW.
The community child and family health nurses visit the families more than 20 times from pregnancy through to the child’s second birthday, instead of the standard one home visit after birth and saw dramatic improvements in SIDS knowledge and maternal confidence.
MECSH involves UNSW academics, based at Liverpool Hospital and staff from the Sydney South West Area Health Service.
The same project was a finalist in the Baxter NSW Health Awards, which showcase NSW Health’s commitment to quality, innovation and excellence in healthcare.
