Graduate Diploma of Paediatrics
The following are eligible to enrol in the Diploma:
- Residents or registrars employed at Sydney Children’s Hospital;
- Overseas trained doctors based at Sydney Children’s Hospital with an Occupational or Educational Visa;
- General practitioners with sufficient experience in paediatrics;
- Residents or registrars employed in paediatrics at hospitals other than Sydney Children’s Hospital.
The program is based on a series of lectures, which take place each Wednesday afternoon. The hospital aims to “protect” this time for Residents and Registrars so that they can attend these lectures. Examinations consist of multiple choice questions, short answer clinical case scenarios, and a clinical “long” case.
The coursework assumes concurrent clinical activities. If you are employed at Sydney Children’s Hospital for 12 months in 2008, you will fulfil the clinical requirements. If you are not employed at Sydney Children’s Hospital, or are employed for a shorter period, you will need to establish whether the clinical experience is appropriate.
The clinical requirements for the diploma were designed to ensure a solid hospital experience. This is reinforced by the clinical component of the assessment (a long case). A number of general practitioners have had previous clinical experience in hospital paediatrics. Consideration will be given to GP’s who have had at least 6 months but preferably 12 months of hospital clinical paediatrics within the last 5 years.
