In recognition of the need to improved staff competence in alcohol withdrawal management, Dr Adam Winstock with the support from the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AER Foundation) have created a new interactive, multi-modal training package presented in CD-Rom format, that is also available on line at
www.ciwa-ar.com. Accredited for CPD points with college of Nursing and the RANZCP (further accreditation with RACGP is pending).this new resource is free and now available.
The
Managing Alcohol Withdrawal with the CIWA-Ar training package includes:
- what is alcohol dependence; early detection of people at risk; taking an alcohol history;
- conducting a brief intervention using the AUDIT
- using the CIWA-Ar alcohol withdrawal assessment
- alcohol withdrawal treatment and management
Learning can be self directed or trainer led and can be run using in built assessments. Designed to fit in with the busy schedule of clinicians the program is modular, with each unit taking 7-15 minutes to complete. The trainer can select training modules to suit the audience (medical, nursing, multi-disciplinary) and the time available for training.
The training is supplemented by:
- three video vignettes of clinical case studies
- sample training programs
- electronic copies of relevant guidelines, tools and references to support the training
- evaluation tools
