The Health In Men Study (HIM)

As we all know, research helps our community respond to the issues raised by HIV and AIDS. In Australia we are internationally recognised for our success in linking research and the community response. Our SMASH project was an example of this.

Recent changes in community attitudes, HIV treatments, and research into the possibility of a future AIDS vaccine, have raised new issues. To address these we established a new study: The Health in Men Study (HIM).

This study was built on the success of SMASH. We needed HIV-negative gay men who live and socialise in Sydney to help with this study. No matter who you were, whether you were in a relationship or not, whether you always practiced safe sex or had never used a condom in your life, you could help. The study was associated with an international collaboration aimed at developing a HIV vaccine but we were concerned with how vaccines might affect the community. So we also needed gay men who felt vaccines were not going to help as well as gay men who were very hopeful about the prospects of HIV vaccines.

In this study, we examined changes in behaviour, attitudes and HIV incidence among HIV-negative gay men in Sydney. All information was treated in a confidential manner.

This study ended on the 30th June 2007.
