General Practice Unit

The General Practice Unit (GPU) has a range of roles including development and liaison regarding general practice within Sydney South West Sydney Area Health Service (SSWAHS) as well as research and teaching.

The GPU was founded in 1991 as part of SSWAHS. Originally part of the Division of Population Health, the GP unit is now part of the Complex Care and General Practice Clinical Stream. The GPU works closely with local Divisions of General Practice and SSWAHS.

The research activities of the GPU are part of the work of the CPHCE. Research and evaluation is focussed on systematic and integrated care of chronic illness, health systems research, preventative interventions on chronic disease risk factors and development of research capacity in primary care. Examples are projects on diabetes, asthma, mental health, cardiovascular disease, smoking cessation and evaluation of GP care after hours.

The GPU hosts the UNSW Primary Health Care Research Network or PHReNet, which builds research capacity with primary health care professionals in Sydney (south, east and south west) along with its regional partners in the Riverina and Illawarra/Shoalhaven. The GP Unit is located at Fairfield Hospital in Prariewood, South West Sydney.
